What Doctor Strange Means to the Future of MCU

MCU just get weirder.

With much anticipation, Doctor Strange has finally hit theaters and suddenly, the Marvel Cinematic Universe just got a lot bigger and dare I say… weirder?  Not only does the film set up the rest of Marvel’s phase 3 plans, it also gives us a glimpse of phase 4.  In this article, I’m going to go deeper on how Doctor Strange is going to shake up the future of MCU.

If you’re interested in the film’s review instead, you can check that out here.

First off, the film confirmed that Eye of Agamotto is in fact an Infinity Stone, namely the Time Stone.  It’s something most people have expected already, but it’s nice to get an actual confirmation.  Seeing how Thanos needs it for Infinity Gauntlet, it’s obvious how Strange is going to be part of Avengers: Infinity War.  Marvel has also stated that they have Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr. met up already, so we can expect a team up between Doc Strange and Tony Stark in the film.

Let’s talk about the mid-credits scene where Strange meets up with Thor.  This scene takes place in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok where the Asgardian is asking the good doctor helps to find his father.  It’s interesting to note that Strange is only helping Thor in exchange of him leaving Earth immediately.  It brings the question as who’s actually going to protect Earth?  The Avengers or the Masters of Mystic Arts?  Maybe Strange and Stark’s meet up in future film won’t be a peaceful one, but one with disagreements on how to protect Earth properly.

At the end, let’s also talk about what it means for the film to introduce the concept of multiverse.  Maybe it’s a way for MCU to introduce alternate heroes such as Miles Morales’ Spider-Man, or even Riri Williams’ Ironheart.  With the power of Time Stone, Marvel Studios can pretty much do whatever they want with the MCU’s continuity, and money will keep on rolling in far from the actors’ contracts expired.

But what do you think?  Will Marvel really use Eye of Agamotto to create another universe?  Are you excited to see Doctor Strange interacting with other heroes?  Will Doctor Strange 2 be a thing?  Let’s discuss in the comments below.
